My published work spans travel, contemporary history, social observation, art and biography. The common thread is Indonesia, usually seen through the people living inside events rather than from a distance.

Major books and collaborations

Jakarta Jive

Published in 2001, Jakarta Jive follows Jakarta residents through the Asian financial crisis, the turmoil of May 1998 and the end of President Soeharto’s rule.

Bali Blues

Published in 2005, Bali Blues is set in Kuta during the year after the 2002 bombing, when grief, fear, economic collapse and the demands of ordinary life collided.

Early travel books

My early published work included East Kalimantan (1988, with Kal Muller) and Yogyakarta (1989), both in the Times Travel Library series.
